Unless you’ve been living under a rock in Kuala Lumpur for the past week you know that the 2016 Summer Olympics have begun in Rio and American athletes have already dominated many competitions, winning several medals for their country.
But this isn’t story about Michael Phelps, Katie Ledecky or the US Womens soccer team. It’s about the lone American weightlifting representative, 30 year old Kendrick Farris from Shreveport, Louisiana. What is especially interesting about Kendrick is that he is a vegan. Yes readers, a vegan weightlifter.
In qualifying for the Olympics, Kendrick broke several American lifting records, including lifting an astonishing 800 pounds and claimed the only spot in the competition for an American. He became a vegan in 2014 when his son was born and came to the realization that he needed to go back to the purest form of life and food.
Kendrick’s event, the 94 kg lift, is scheduled for August 13th. He joins sprinter Morgan Mitchell and long jumper Marquis Goodwin as the three vegan Olympians.
Bring home the gold, vegans!
